A little peek into a senior session at Pioneer Park.

High School senior in down in the tall golden grass with the sun shining through over her head at Pioneer Park in Tumwater, WA.

A question I get asked a lot and you may even be thinking now is, “Where should we do my senior photos?” When it comes to picking the perfect location for your senior photos, the Olympia area is full of beautiful backdrops but one spot I always come back to is Pioneer Park in Tumwater. Whether you’re going for laid-back and natural or want something that feels timeless and Pacific Northwest, Pioneer Park checks all the boxes and here are a few reasons why.

1. A Mix of Scenery in One Spot

Pioneer Park gives you variety without having to drive all over town. You’ve got towering evergreens, open grassy fields, winding trails, and access to the Deschutes River all in one location. That means we can capture multiple looks and vibes in a single session. Think casual jeans and sneakers by the water, then a more polished outfit surrounded by greenery. Depending on the time of the year the park looks completely different. Green, golden and wildflowers – it changes with the seasons.

2. Beautiful Lighting All Day Long

With so many trees and open spaces, Pioneer Park offers great lighting at almost any time of day. During golden hour (right before sunset), the light filters through the trees beautifully, creating that soft, glowing effect that makes photos look warm and dreamy.

3. It Feels Peaceful and Private

If you’re nervous about being in front of the camera, this park is perfect. There are plenty of quiet corners where you can relax and be yourself without feeling like you’re being watched. Most days, we can find little tucked-away spots that make it feel like you have the whole park to yourself.

4. It Shows Off the PNW Vibe

For seniors who want their photos to really feel like home, Pioneer Park has that classic Pacific Northwest look. Lush green trees, mossy trails, and the sound of the river nearby. It’s the perfect way to represent Olympia and Tumwater while still keeping your photos timeless.

5. Easy to Get To (and Easy to Love)

Located just minutes from downtown Tumwater, Pioneer Park is convenient for anyone in the Olympia area. Parking is easy, and we don’t have to hike far to get to the best spots which means more time for photos and outfit changes.

6. It Works for Every Style

Whether your style is boho and earthy, sporty and casual, or polished and classic, Pioneer Park can match your vibe. I’ve shot everything from flowing dresses in the grass to cozy fall sweaters under the trees and it always looks amazing.

If you’re a Class of 2026 senior in the Olympia area and still deciding where to take your photos, Pioneer Park in Tumwater is one of my top picks for a reason. It’s versatile, beautiful, and full of the PNW charm that makes your senior photos feel personal and special.

Let’s make it happen—your dream photos are waiting under those trees.
