Hey parents, I see you. You’ve got a soon-to-be high school senior, and the list of “lasts” is starting to feel a little overwhelming. Before the cap and gown even come into play, there’s one major item to tick off the senior year checklist: the senior photos.
As an Olympia-based senior photographer, I hear the same question from every single family: “When is the best time for our photos?”
The truth is, there’s no single “right” answer. But there is a best answer for your senior. Here in the Pacific Northwest, our seasons are incredibly distinct, each offering a totally different vibe for photos. It’s all about finding the one that matches your senior’s personality and your family’s vision.
Let’s break down the big seasons and what each one brings to the table for an Olympia senior session.
Summer Senior Photos: The Classic Cool (July – September)
There’s a reason summer is the most popular choice. It’s the classic American senior photo experience. Sun-kissed skin, late golden hour, and no school to worry about.
- The Golden Hour: This is the hour before sunset when the light is pure magic. Because summer days are so long, we get a huge window of this warm, dreamy glow.
- Endless Location Options: From the sandy shores of Boston Harbor to the sunny steps of the Capitol, every location is game. No need to worry about mud or rain-slicked docks!
- The Vibe: Summer photos have an energy all their own. They feel adventurous, laid-back, and capture that feeling of freedom before the final year begins.
Fall Senior Photos: The Cozy, Classic NW (October – November)
This is a personal favorite. There is nothing more quintessentially PNW than fall in Washington. It’s the season of flannel, falling leaves, and that crisp air.
- The Colors: The rich reds, fiery oranges, and deep golds of the changing leaves are a stunning and dramatic backdrop. Imagine photos at Tumwater Falls Park with the vibrant foliage—it’s breathtaking.
- Sweater Weather: This is the season for layering! Chunky sweaters, flannels, boots, and beanies—the clothing options are cozy, stylish, and full of texture.
- The Vibe: Fall photos feel warm and authentic. They capture the transition of the season, which perfectly mirrors this point in your senior’s life.
Spring Senior Photos: The Fresh Finish (April – May)
Spring in the PNW is a hidden gem for seniors. It’s the season of blooming magnolias, sudden sun bursts, and that vibrant, electric green that only happens after a long winter. Spring may not even been a thought for senior photos but I’ll tell ya – it’s my favorite.
- The Bloom: If your senior loves florals, this is their season. Think cherry blossoms at the Capitol Building or wild rhododendrons at a local park. It’s romantic, whimsical, and bright.
- The “Right Now” Look: Because these photos are taken just months before graduation, they capture exactly how your senior looks right as they cross the finish line. There’s something special about having photos that represent the person walking across that stage in June.
- Soft Light: Spring light is softer and more diffused than the harsh summer sun. This is incredibly flattering and gives the skin a lovely, natural radiance.
Okay, so what now?
Take a deep breath. There is no wrong answer here! Your senior’s photos are a celebration of them, their journey, and this incredible milestone.
Here’s my advice:
- Ask your senior! What season do they love? Do they feel more like a summer sunset or a fall leaf? Their comfort and happiness are the most important thing.
- Look at their closet. Are they a fan of sun dresses and shorts, or are they a flannel-and-boots kind of person? Their outfits should reflect their chosen season.
- Check the Deadlines. If your school has an early fall deadline for the yearbook, summer or early fall is your best bet. If you just want beautiful memories to display at the grad party, spring is a fantastic, fresh option.
No matter which season you choose, I promise we’ll capture something bold, beautiful, and uniquely them.
